How To Improve The Change Experience

With businesses needing to reset, restart or rebuild, change is required now more than ever. However, research by Gartner HR, shows that impacts of COVID-19 has reduced an employee’s capacity to absorb change without fatigue by 50% in 2020 compared to 2019.  This is due to concerns about the economy, job security, their health and the health of their friends and family.

As we continue to recommend, the more you involve your employees in the decision making for change, the more they will absorb change without showing signs of fatigue.  What is change fatigue? It’s the negative reactions to change including burnout, frustration, lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern – resulting in less productivity and greater problems.

So what can you do to increase your employee’s ability to absorb change without fatigue:-

  • Consider how your employees experience change. This is not just about the outcomes of changed behaviours.  By considering how the end result may impact the employees as a first step, this will assist in what steps to take to bring about the most successful result.
  • Consult with your employees. Consultation does not just mean speaking at your employees. Take the time to listen.  Ask about their own experiences and what doesn’t work, to get a greater understanding of what changes are required.
  • Empower your employees to engage in and shape the change experience.  Involving your team members in change builds greater team cohesion and trust.  Teach them that they can bring those experiences that don’t work to you for action and consideration. The more involved in the change, the more receptive to change they will be.
  • Follow up – don’t believe that every change is perfect and doesn’t require tweaking. It is important to follow up over a period of time (on more than one occasion) to ensure that the change has been for the better or if further tweaks are required to ensure it is the best solution for all involved.

It is important to remember that your employees can be a great asset when making change to the betterment of the business.
